Enrico Chieffi, the skipper who was the Star Class World Champion in 1996, is racing in Porto Cervo at Star World Championship and won the first day. He answers some questions on environmental sustainability.
As a sailor, what do you do daily to help limit pollution?
I try to do small things every day, starting from drinking tap water when I can and avoiding plastic bottles. As a sailor I’m very tuned in to the problems with pollution in the ocean. I love the sea and the wind and in my line of work the ocean is part of all of our lives and we all have to make a contribution towards saving it.
Do you know how much plastic is in the ocean?
I know that there’s a floating garbage patch that is as large as some countries, so I think it’s more than important, it’s absolutely necessary that we do something before it’s too late.
