The category 5 hurricane Irma which hit the Caribbean region in September 2017 also hit the Caribbean base of the YCCS in Virgin Gorda. The main body of the Clubhouse did not suffer any major structural damage, however the marina was completely demolished by the force of the storm. Due to this, after having relocated the arrival point of the first leg of the Atlantic Anniversary Regatta (dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the YCCS and the 150^th anniversary of the NRV of Hamburg), the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has been forced to cancel its schedule of Caribbean regattas.

The damage caused by the hurricane is currently being assessed in order to identify the next steps to be taken.
