Porto Cervo, 10th September 2017. "Safety above all else" was the simple and incontrovertible message with which the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Commodore, Riccardo Bonadeo and the Sports Director, Edoardo Recchi, were forced to communicate the cancellation of today’s scheduled race to celebrate the Club’s 50th anniversary.
The adverse weather conditions which have had serious consequences in other parts of Italy did not create particular problems in Porto Cervo, however with winds gusting up to 35 knots on the race course and forecasted to strengthen, boats and crews had little choice but to remain at the dock. Participants enrolled in the race included Botta Dritta 5, with which fondly-remembered YCCS Member Luigi Carpaneda won the association’s 40th Anniversary Regatta. A book chronicling Carpaneda’s life story, including his two Olympic victories in fencing and world titles in sailing and fencing, was presented by his family on occasion of the 50th anniversary celebrations.
One boat that would have happily dealt with today’s weather conditions is the Open 50 Vento di Sardegna owned by single-handed sailor Andrea Mura - two-time winner of the OSTAR and a YCCS sporting member – and due to be helmed by Commodore Bonadeo for the anniversary race.
The J/70 boats arriving for the upcoming Audi J/70 World Championship in Porto Cervo, some of which were enrolled in the YCCS 50th Anniversary Regatta, were advised of the weather front which is expected to persist through tomorrow in order to avoid any safety issues.
All of the boats enrolled in the event received a commemorative plate in traditional Sardinian ceramic.
Tomorrow, 11th September, the Audi J/70 World Championship gets underway with the Welcome Cocktail. A record number of more than 170 boats will compete for the World title through Saturday 16th September.
