Palma de Mallorca, 2016 August 2. After an opening day when the reliable sea breeze proved harder than usual to read, it was back to business as usual for the seven classes of the 35 Copa Del Rey MAPFRE today. If the breeze was a little less than hoped for, slightly more streaky and up and down, it was back to intense, tight racing battling for the prime positions on the start line which usually are the first big step towards winning.
“Azzurra” lead the Singular Kitchen IRC 1 class after a fifth and first today while Jean-Luc Petithuguenin’s “Paprec” lies second and were the best scoring boat in the fleet today with a second and a third. Top honours were shared among the Italian teams though because “Xio/Hurakan” won the first race, their first triumph sailing the new generation Vrolijk designed “Gladiator” which has been leant to them by British owner Tony Langley. They sailed both races with no main pedestal winch after the drive belt broke before the first start.
“Azzurra” lead by 2.5 points. Both the Montblanc Maxi72 and Singular Kitchen IRC Class 1 fleets race a coastal race on Wednesday.
