Palma de Mallorca, May 5, 2016
Azzurra is in second place so far after the first day of racing at PalmaVela. Quantum is placed first.
Almost the entire TP52 fleet came to their test event at PalmaVela: nine out of the eleven boats registered to race in the first official event of the 52 Super Series scheduled to be held in Scarlino, near Follonica, Tuscany, starting on May 25th.
Azzurra got off to a good start today, placing second and fifth in today’s two windward/leeward races. Quantum did even better with a first and a second place. Alegre was just behind Azzurra with two fourth place finishes. Platoon and Bronenosec are currently tied for points: nine each. Provezza is currently sixth in spite of having won the second race, penalized by having placed last in the first race after having blown out her gennaker.
Breezes in the Palma bay picked up at around 12:30 and were at about 10 knots that gradually built up to 14. A nearby weather front changed the usual left rotation of the winds to a rightward rotation. There were sudden wind shifts, at times even large ones, on the right side of the course.
Tomorrow’s forecast calls for unstable conditions, with cloudy skies and showers expected. Wind holes and more changes in wind direction, with breezes varying from 8 to 18 knots, will make for challenging conditions. The start is scheduled for 12 noon and as always, fans can follow Azzurra’s progress live from the regatta course on Facebook and Twitter.
Quotes of the day:
Guillermo Parada, skipper: “This first day of racing went fine and is in line with our expectations. Quantum is fast and they sailed very well. So they are currently in first place. On our part, we’re happy with our performance.”
Vasco Vascotto, tactician: “We had a pretty good day even though today there was one team that sailed better than everyone else. We have to keep in mind that we’re here for a test run, not to win at any cost. Our boat speed is good and I don’t see any weak spots. We’re on the right track for the season to come and we’re doing fine so far.”
