Porto Cervo, 17th September 2015. Tomorrow sees the start of Sailing Champions League (SCL) Final in Porto Cervo. The event, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), is scheduled from 18th to 20th September and will host over 30 teams representing Yacht Clubs from 14 different nations.
The brand new YCCS fleet of eight J70 yachts has been fine-tuned over the past few days and teams have been practicing today on the waters off the Costa Smeralda. The formula for the regattas consists of flights of short, fast windward-leeward races of no more than 15 minutes each. Tactics, teamwork and sailing skills will be the deciding factors over the course of the three days.
The Clubs competing in Porto Cervo are the top qualified teams in their respective national leagues as well as a few “wild card” additions which include the host Club (YCCS), the winning Club of last year’s inaugural Sailing Champions League final (Kongelig Dansk Yachtklub of Copenhagen) and several teams from nations looking to set up their national leagues next year. The participating nations in the 2015 event are: Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy Malta, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom.
“We are delighted to conclude our intense Mediterranean season with a completely new event,” commented YCCS Commodore Riccardo Bonadeo. “Alongside regattas for superyachts and formula 1 classes we are committed to promoting interclub events such as this one which are key to attracting youngsters into sailing. We are therefore delighted to host these teams representing the top yacht Clubs of Europe and we look forward to a weekend of fast exhilarating racing thanks to this new and extremely popular formula.”
In addition to live tracking the event will also be broadcast in live streaming on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September with German Olympic sailor Marcus Baur, and British Olympic trainer Richard Parslow commentating.
Following a hard day on the racecourse teams will be able to relax and unwind at several social events at the YCCS Clubhouse which kick off with the Welcome Cocktail on Friday.
