Porto Cervo, 9 December 2024. The final leg of the WingFoil Racing World Cup, which took place in Jericoacoara, Brazil, concluded on Saturday, 7 December. Maddalena Spanu, an athlete in the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's Young Azzurra programme, took part in the event, claiming second place behind Spain's Nia Suardiaz, winner of the event and the title of WingFoil Racing World Champion 2024.
The competition in Brazil kicked off on 3 December and was marked by challenging weather conditions, allowing only three out of the five scheduled days of racing to be completed. On day one, three long-distance races were held, with Maddalena finishing in second place overall. No races were held the following day due to light winds, while on the day three the 20 competing athletes completed 8 races. At the end of the qualifying phase, Maddalena’s consistent results secured her second place overall and a spot in the Medal Race. Her second place finish in the Jericoacoara leg earned her silver at the WingFoil Racing 2024 World Championship.
“It’s been a long year full of emotions and challenges, and has ended with a result that makes me really happy. I now know which aspects to work on to improve, which provides even more motivation to grow and develop. The goal for 2025 will be to aim even higher and to continue to give my best at every opportunity!” commented Maddalena on the result achieved in Brazil, as well as an intense year of competition.
The Young Azzurra athlete had a resoundingly successful year in 2024, claiming the titles of WingFoil Racing European Champion and WingFoil Racing Marathon World Champion.
The YCCS congratulates Maddalena Spanu on her excellent results and is happy to support her on her path of sporting development.
